Ok, had the bright idea of tossing the bioballs from chamber 2 of my biocube 29 and putting some live rock, chaeto with a light. As the bioballs seemed to be harboring more crud than they were benefiting me at this point.

    y'all with me so far?

So I pulled the bioballs out took some plexi and my trusty heat gun and make a nice sleeve to slide into chamber 2, open at both ends for waterflow, so I can lift it all out if I need to clean.

ok sleeve, rock, small bag of macaroni and chaeto in the bottom. Water level in chamber 2 was too low to keep everything covered.

I then took my handy little saw and notched out the flow from chamber 1 to chamber 2 to add more volume of water.

This is where I blew the cat.

Chamber 2 water level went way up, chamber 3 water level went way up (several inches above the max fill line)

Water level in main tank went down about 3/4 of an inch.

So, how do I decrease #3 while keeping main and #2 elevated?

Or I guess the follow up question is: Does the water level in chamber 3 really mean anything?

Ok, direction of arrows indicates the flow of water.

#1 is intake, #2 is filtration, #3 is return

No, the water level in chamber three means squat. I took the notch out b/w chambers 1&2 just like you. I then put my float switches for my ATO in the third chamber and everything works great. The water level indicator is more if you leave everything just as it was when you purchased it to give you an idea as to when to add water.

Good to know, just bugs me now having that gap along the top edge having less water than I"m used to having it's throwing my sense of evaporation off.

You can always add more water now and raise the level.

with the change in flow and chamber 2 & 3 holding more water I'll be adding around another gallon to my system. That's certainly not a bad thing. Unintended bonus i guess.
