I'll try and make this quick but I thought this story might be helpful. I read here a lot but don't post very often.
I haven't followed the rule's very well and make a lot of mistakes but 3 weeks ago I bought a yellow tang from who I considered a reputable saltwater fish and reef shop that I bought from in the past and trusted. MY mistake. The only thing I noticed about the fish was that it was easy to catch, not normal for a tang. Was busy looking around shop for other things to buy. Arrived home, tang didn't look well. No quarintine, just drip method.Mistake #1. Tang was dead 6hrs later.
Up until this point, with my 2 year old tank I never had a death. 2-clowns who live in a big anemone(3 anemone's total),yellow wrasse(was going to be given away),coral beauty and flame angle(I know about angles but there happy),blood shrimp, skunk(cleaner)shrimp, zoas, snail,a bunch of crabs and last but not least ONE tough regal tang. This is 60gal(I know, too small for a tang but so far he honestly looks happy).
SO,about 24 hrs after the yellow tang died my regal tank had the worst case of ick I ever seen. Up until this point I never seen a single sign of ick in my tank. Over the past 3 weeks anything that could go wrong with this tang has gone wrong. Covered with ick on the outside of his skin, then you could see the ick under his skin. Scratching him self on rocks one day put not the next. One day by the cleaner shrimp steady then not the next. One day popeye(just a scratch I think) in one eye then gone in a couple of days only to get popeye in the other eye. Then another day he had popeye in both eyes(had a hard time eating because he couldn't see) and for this whole time he seemed to be covered in velvet. This scenario repeated itself over the last 3 weeks.
The 2 clowns, and the yellow wrasse never showed any sign of illness.
The coral beauty and flame angle spent more time then usual with the cleaner shrimp for a couple of days, otherwise are fine.
Up until this point all fish including regal tang have eaten like pigs. Any one of them would have been hard to catch.
I kept my water parameters perfect, a varied diet all soaked in garlic(I know it doesn't cure ick), feed more than usual, extra water changes and skimmed hard.
    Never medicated with anything.
This tang never showed signs of giving up and as of today one eye is clear and the other one is 90%. I can see one spot that looks like an ick spot but hard to tell and the velvet look is gone. 99% back to his own self.
Its amazing how an upset tank can bother a person so much. I feel a little better that things are looking up for my tank but now I have to deal with the fact that I still have an ick infected tank, mainly because of trusting a saltwater shop and my fault for not quarantining. I know my battle's not over but hopefully my fish and I will get a break for a while.
I think the guy that I got the yellow tang from knew it was sick, just hoping it might live. When I called him the next day he said he would refund me my money with no hesitation.
Anyway, just a story of what I thought was One tough regal tang and poor husbandry. I figure sooner or later I'll be genius at this hobby if learning from your mistakes is any help.I make a lot of mistakes.
Thought it might help somebody from making the same mistake.

And they say Regal Tangs aren't hardy! Before 3reef trial & error was the only way I learned.

Regals are a lot tougher than people think. My husband accidently burried ours under sand and then had him smashed up against the rock and side of tank once. (same fish) He lived to tell about it....never looked quite perfect, but lived for a couple of years after that until tank overheated while on vacation and melted everything.

Keep up the garlic, it does help keep parasites at bay. I've seen it work in my own tank!!

    Small update
Tank looks completely normal, all fish are A1, never seen a single sign of ick for 2 weeks. Tang has actually grown since the ick outbreak, his color and overall look is better then its ever been. I never seen him so healty looking.
I know, short success is not forever success, just an update.
