ok i have a 55 gallon tanks setup right now with coral chips and undergravel filter, but im wanting to turn it in to a reef tank i went today and got 120 lbs of sand, i ordered 80 lbs of rock (i have some live rock in there now) the only think i don't have is a skimmer and the lighting that i need. but if i get a skimmer and the light that i am using now(not even sure what it is) do u think i could get it set back up and get my fish in it and get the light when i can or now. also i have a 10 gallon tank that i am setting up right now do u think a CB, damsil, clown, starfish, and 5 crabs could make it in there till i got my 55 gallon tank set back up. Im just not sure what to use what kinda filter should i use with the skimmer since i am getting rid of the undergravel>

i would think youd need to let is cycle again changing the substrate. if you have fish you might want to setup a temp home before you change it over.

that is what i was wondering if a 10 gallon would hold them long enough to let the 55 gallon cylcle but would it be ok to the the reef tank cycle with the light that i am using now and next month when i get the money for the lighting i can just add it on there

and another ? is how many fish can u have in a 55 gallon reef tank

That is a good plan follow ducksmashers' advise.

Stocking depends on the size of the fish and other factors. A good start is build up to 1 inch per 4 gallons.

You don't need lighting during a cycle, and you won't need a filter with live rock unless you want to polish the water with floss changed weekly.

No filter period even with the new rock.
