Hey guys, quick question for you. I have an old HOB filter from a FW tank that I plan on using on a SW tank. The FW tank crashed and the fish had ulcers, fitler has been out of use and dry for over a year and a half. Is it safe to use or should I do any special cleaning besides hot water? Whatever organism that crashed the FW should be dried out and dead and nto able to live in SW anyway right?

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
As long as you rinse it completely I do not see an issue. The media like sponge or charcoal I would change out for new.

I'd clean it very well take it all apart and replace the media. Not sure how you crashed you FW but you don't want that to happen in your SW too.

Honestly Im not sure what happened to the FW tank. Ive ahd tanks for years and never saw anything like it the fish developed a white ulceration on their stomachs and it jsut kept getting bigger and bigger until it killed them. Never did figure out what it was but I broke down the tank and threw out all the decorations and substrate. Cleaned the filter and put it in a closet for the last couple years set up a new tank with new stuff and have never had the issue again. I already threw out all the sponges from the old filter and do not plan on using it as a regular filter, I am going to put a sponge prefitler on the intake and fill the chamber with some sort of biological or chemical media of which I am unsure of.
