hey, really enjoying this site, my two boys (8-11) are on here constantly reading, were new to the marine world, but not to fish keeping.
all 3 of us are divers as well, NJ has some great wrecks, but i have not had
them deep yet, 40' has been their max, so not a whole lot to see, and we surely dont have coral, just crusty crappy stuff, lol

anyway, they are way into our tank, and kevin, (8yrold) spotted these last week, and we are watching them, its the 2 red things to the right of the sponge
    any ideas?

and what about this green stuff? its a micro algae? right? if so, what can i use to get rid of it? i took three of the rocks that have it the worse, soaked them in bleach, let them dry, soaked in water, dry, soak, then soaked in prime to remove any trace elements of the chlorine, let them dry for a week, put them in, and within a week, the stuff was back! it dont seem to bother anything, its just so BRIGHT! this stuff is like neon green. my local fish store guy, i gave him a piece cuz he likes it. lol to each is own.
is there a certain type snail i need? i have a variety of snails, but no one seems interested

I am not the expert here on 3 reef but I'll try to help out. It looks like the small red objects to the right of your sponge is either a type of sponge or tunicate. They are very small in the picture and to tell for sure, but do a couple searches and see if that is what you have.

I too would like to have that lime green rock, lol. If you want to get rid of it then I would use a viniger bath. In my experience vineger has killed all types of algea. Make sure you rinse well afterwords, like you did before.

are you serious about wanting the green rocks? yyechh!
the tank is about 4 months running, and that was the first algae to grow,
the rock we started with was not live, and i know not ideal, but i had some bad guidance, it has spread to some of the live rock we have put in, but not to the extent as on this type of rock, which has very tiny pores.
on the fiji rock and others, its a darker green.
if i turn them over, the bottom is white and the green will go away, and start on the top, i keep flipping them, about evey7-10 days

Just my two cents on the green rock - looks like green coralline algae - is it powdery? calcified? or slimy?

    +1 on tunicate or sponge

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
I can not really get much of an id from the first image. I am inclined to think sponge, only guess though.

The lime green is the initial growth of green coralline algae. Give it another month and you will start to see the purple pop up.

that green has been growing for 3-4 months now, i was hoping its a coraline.
i thought it might be a micro algae, cuz i seen this on chucks addiction

    Bacterial and Algae Hitch Hikers
    down under micro.

our tank has not developed any coraline, as in the purple on the glass, or where i would expect it to grow, only place is inside of this giant clam shell i found
in a lfs, it grows on the inside in the shade, and under a couple pieces of rock that have shady areas, but if this is going to turn to the purple, ill be in trouble, cuz i got alot of that green stuff. lol
