So 8-9 months ago I set up my first reef tank at my business (58 gallon). Since then I bought a house, and want a tank there too. So I ordered a drilled 125, and still don't really know what I'm going to stock it with...

Do I go FOWLER, Reef, FO, cold water, sandy bottom... argh.

If only there was a way to keep tangs, triggers, puffers, eels, shrimp, crabs, corals, etc in one tank :\

How do you all decide what to do with a new tank?

You could do an aggressives tank if you wanted, then it might be ok.

I dont think I ever really decide, I just let it develop and it becomes, what it becomes
Ive had 2 x FOWLR that are now occupied with corals
FOWLR is a good way to start IMO as you can go through the cycle, the early algae blooms etc, the parameter instability etc before making a change over to housing corals

if you start with an aggresive FOWLR and see how that feels
if you want to move onto corals, then its a relatively easy job to remove and part ex the things that would no longer be compatible

its easier to progress from FOWLR - corals, than it would be do do the reverse IMHO

    depends on the fish

some non reef safe fish are OK with corals in general, but make a meal of any inverts in the tank

some reef safe with caution fish, may eat corals, or may not- the species varies in its habits and you get either angels or rogues!

now there are some fish that chomp on rock in order to get at things that dwell in there

so it depends on the fish you want really
some are safe with some things and others are not safe with anything

I, myself had a FOWLR tank before but then wanted to move onto a reef with corals.... then you have to make up your mind because the aggressive fish (Puffers, Triggers etc.) won't work with corals. So, in other words, make up your mind what you want first... then think about the stocking. You might regret setting up a FOWLR tank and then what to do with the fish? Think about it and then research....
