What I meant by my post was that it isn't as simple as just talking to your LFS owner etc. Since I don't speak Japanese...but I do apologize. I did somewhat take your advice and enlisted the help of my Japanese friend who speaks English pretty well. He is not into this hobby, but would do the talking for me. I wanted to find the bushing piece which is not readily available . The only suggestion I could get from the guys (two of them) in the LFS was to hang a piece of plastic in the standpipe, attached to a stick or whatever apparatus at the top. I could see it working but I could also see the plastic ripping and clogging up my drain... algae growing on it etc. I decided to fashion my own bushing and shot some video of it... it works like a champ for the noise. As for the toilet bowl in the sump...I am going to have to reconfigure my plumbing... as it is now... it is a straight shot into the sump with no angles at all, the compartment fills up and just burps periodically and it basically sounds like a washing machine.

I went ahead and reconfigured the drain from the tank into the sump, the magnavore sump has two inlets... I added the second one and instead of the straight drain, the water hits a couple of 90 angles after leaving the tank, then Ts into both inlets... at first it was a lot quieter and didn't seem to burp as it was doing before... It doesn't really burp as badly and is quieter now but after a day or so of running it, I still have the washing machine sound (seems it does purge or burp, causing this sound). Is this something I will have to live with? normal?

any advice? the drain is 50mm then goes down to 20mm... do I need to lessen the downsize by using bigger diameter PVC?

or add length to the pipes, so the water slows down some before going into the sump?

I had the same exact problem as you. I had a noisy overflow AND and gargle toilet sound. I did somewhat of a hofer gurgle buster, but simplier (see pic). Its essebtially PVC with 4-6 3/4 inch holes drilled into it (depending on return pump flow rate, be sure to start with 4 first and work your way up as needed to match return pump flow) with an endcap or plug at the top of the PVC with a 1/2 hole I beleive it is drilled on top where you put your air line tubing like the HGB...(you may find you just need the hole at the top and not the tube depending on your overflow...mine did not need the air line tubing). This takes away all those weird couplers and all that nonsense and creates the same silent overflow...or at least it did for me.

If your find the water going into sump is still noisy....if your inlet hose into sump is bendy try different angles of curve to the hose if it is straight PVC or not bendable hose you will have to put some sort of valve on it to regulate the flow to quiet it down. GOOD LUCK. Let me know if you got any questions.

    SaltyFred,

I do appreciate your reply and the info... However... I have already built the HGB and it is working well for the draining water.

The noisiness that I am dealing with now, is coming from the water in the sump... I have the Magnavore wet/dry filter. the flow is pretty strong and as the water is pouring into the filter socks from the first compartment, it is pretty loud... it seems to surge every other minute or so, making a swooshing noise. This was much worse when I only had one pipe for an inlet.. I have since added the second pipe and it is not as bad but still not acceptable to me. I think the only fix might be to add a ball valve on my return line from the sump, to slow the water a bit.

It is a great place to be...I love being overseas...My biggest complaint would be the poor exchange rate
