I have a drilled tank that is really noisy when draining into the sump. The tank did not come with a secondary cylinder with holes drilled in it so it is just a straight piece of 50mm PVC (I am in Japan)... This is part of my problem... I was going to build a HGB Hofer Gurgle Buster Hofer Gurgle Buster Construction but I don't know where to get the parts here in japan... the local home centers have everything that you would ever need...except for certain pieces of PVC other than basic elbows tees and such. So anyway, in hopes that there is someone out there here in Japan in Tokyo that might know where I can get the more complex pieces of PCV... let me know. Also, I did see the secondary cylinders with holes and slots at the top at the LFS... Does anyone know if I put this in place, would it alleviate this issue?

The 4 or 5 pieces you need for the Hofer Gurgle Buster are common fitting found in our local home improvement stores. Have you tried finding a local plumbing supply store or even talking to a plumber that may help you obtain them for a few extra bucks.
I suspect your LFS owner may even know where to source the pieces. Anyone who runs a setup and maintenance service will probably know as well.

I have 2 of these on my system and I can tell you they work great once you get the air tube adjusted correctly :)

I do not think you read my post or paid much attention when you read it. I am in JAPAN! It is not as easy as you suggest up above. Thank you for your reply though:)

You don't have any hardware stores, plumbing supply stores, or anything similar?

From my experience with the Gurgle Buster, I doubt it will solve your problem directly. The Gurgle Buster will quiet the area in the top of your overflow drain where the water and air meet. It probably won't help with the toilet drain sound. You may have to decrease your return flow when you add the GB, which may help. I've had the same problem with mine. I built the Gurgle Buster then took it off because it didn't really help my situation. Try to adjust the angle that your overflow water enters your sump. Also you can cut down the amount of flow through it. These two together solved my toilet flushing sound. Others may disagree, but this has been my experience.

    Good Luck.

I tried googling Japanese reef forums - could not find one from here
if there is one maybe you can find it on Japan google or equivelent and there are English speakers on there - you might be able to locate some English speaking , Japanese reefers or even other Ex Pats who know the score on where to get parts

unrelated but maybe interesting - I found this on my google travels

Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium - The Mysteries of Okinawa Revealed -

maybe you could contact these people as they do have an aquarium shop and they may be able to point you in right direction?

Actually I did read and understand your problem wich is why I suggested asking tradesmen or supply stores rather than Home depot which you already stated did not have what you needed. I'm guessing I was not clear enough with my description in my answer which I admit sometimes gets less coherent when I get tired and try posting instead of going to bed :joker:
