im still kinda new to all this and was wondering what an appropriate nitrate level should be for a FOWLR tank. the highest ive ever let mine go is about 40ppm and my fish seem fine.

That won't hurt, but getting down to 20 or lower would help with more sensitive species.

Lower the better. It really depends on what kind of fish you have though to give you an answer. Something like false percs can practically thrive in nothing but nitrates, yet there are certain fish that will die quickly in 5-10ppm.

    based on my expierence:

40 is fine, above that your fish may start being stunted.

above 100, your fish that acclimated to that level will be stressed, new additions may not take the strain and may die

guessing probably around 400 most fish may die.

the larger the fish the more tolerant they are, so smaller fish or fry may die lower on the scale.

    lower is always better.
