Connor, I wouldn't have any damsel in any of my tanks for any reason. However, there are people out there that love them. I would say they are best left for a tank of only aggressors, just damsels, or other fish that can hold their own with them. Take it back to the store or give it away.
As for pathogens, there is not much you can do about that now without sterilizing and starting over.
At this point I would get the damsel out as soon as possible and let finish, hoping for the best.
While it's not my favourite scenario, it has been done by others.

Peppermints are fine as they don't tend to pick. Something like a cleaner shrimp can drive your seahorse crazy, as it did mine. Some horses tolerate the picking well, however..... some don't.

Take a look at this for possible shrimp. Shrimp Tankmates.

if you decide to purchase a shrimp for your setup monitor it any its tank for a while before deciding to buy it, i had a 45 gallon seahorse tank with a coral banded shrimp and a peppermint shrimp and one morning i woke up and they were both snacking on one of my babies, i still cant figure which of them it was, most likely the banded, but all im saying is be cautious in adding tankmates in with seahorses as anything practically can eat them, i have had success keeping them with dragonets and small blennies and gobies.

Coral Bandeds are known for taking down fish now and then and I'd never keep one with any seahorses.
Peppermint shrimp normally work out just fine, but my first tank had 3 of them in it but not for long. The reidis in the tank tore the shrimp apart and ate a lot of the pieces, but left a holy mess in the tank. As far as I know, this is unusual and should not normally be expected.
