    Hello Coral Experts,

This past Saturday my LFS gave me a frag of Xenia. As you read in my first post I am new to corals and way out in left field when it comes to knowledge. Yesterday I did my monthly water change and before I started I decided to move the Xenia from the rock that I placed it on to another rock, the Xenia came attached to a small abandoned shell. Well when went to move it I noticed that it was now attached to the shell that it came on and the rock that I placed it on. Well I very gently tried to peel it from the live rock that it had attached to, but instead of peeling off it sort of tore and stayed attached to the live rock. I was upset that I may have hurt the Xenia so I placed the original frag on the rock that I wanted to place it on and went on with my water change. After I was finished with the water change and let everything settle I looked at the Xenia and it was shriveled up and not looking good at all. The piece that was left on the live rock after relocation was shriveled up as well. I thought I had damaged the Xenia and it was dieing. Well this morning when I went to feed the fish both of the Xenia frags were up, pulsing and waving around with the water flow and looking really good and health.
Now for the questions? Did I hurt the Xenia when I moved it? How do I move it in the future from one rock to another? If it is stuck to a piece of live rock how do I cut it to move it and if so what do I cut it with? I know nothing about producing frags to start growth in other areas of the tank. So far it seems to be growing quit well for having it less than a week. With this kind of growth how do I control it? If the Xenia does well in my tank and starts to grow like a weed I would give frags to people that would want some instead of trying to sell it to the LFS. How do I keep it trimmed and produce the new frags.
Thanks in advance for the help and answers.:)

I feel like it's impossible to hurt xenia, I've put Joes juice in it, I've placed Galaxia on it to stop its growth (Galaxia has a terrible sting) I've cut it with scissors a scalpel and ripped it.. I eventually started over because xenia was taking over.. Do I love the look yes, will I ever add it again? No

+1 xenia is just about impossible to kill. I love it too, but it has its very own pillar far far away from everything else so it can't spread. I've never fragged mine, but from what I understand its very easy. You can get a fragging kit, scalpel blade, etc. from most sites. check the sponsors page if you don't know any. I've also heard of people using scissors. basically you just cut it, then use some thread and tie it down on whatever you want the frag on. You may also want to try to keep it confined by isolating it. A lot of people hate xenia because it WILL take over your entire tank.

I use scissors. Yes, it will take over if you're not careful where you placed it. I am dealing with that now. I had it contained with a torch, which it eventually overtook anyway. Now it's covering half my live rock, and growing up the back of my tank.

That being said, if you can contain it to where it's thick in one spot, I love it. My clowns are fun to watch playing in my xenia ;D

Also, if you decide to prune your xenia down the road, be sure you get ALL the cut pieces out of the tank. Little sections will float off otherwise and start growing someplace else

I love the pulsing xenia too. I'd recommend getting it off that rock. Or let it grow and keep it cut back severely.

Put it on a fist sized or smaller rock, that way you can move it or remove it if it gets near the rest of the rock. Or drop it into the sandbed if you don't want it on the rock.

You can't kill xenia unless some unknown water param goes a bit funny, then it will all melt at once...::)

Thank you to all that replied with their knowledge and experience. I will keep all suggestion in mind as I move forward with my Xenia. I will definitely try to keep it contained in one part of the tank. The rock that I moved it to is small and can be moved around the tank easily.

    Thanks again
