Its a ways off and I know every one has a different opinion but I want to someday upgrade and was wondering what size would be a good up grade? I currently have a 30 gallon! I am leaning towards a 150 gallon.

When it comes to upgrading, I have learned that if your going to do it, then do it right! Spend some time writing down the things you have learned from your 30 gallon (mistakes,etc.).

Do lots of research! When it comes to bigger tanks, you need bigger equipment: Lighting, skimmers, circulation; things that get really expensive.

Do some DIY searching online to see if you could save a couple bucks. A DIY'd wavemaker is hundreds of dollars less than a manufactured one and will perform about the same. If you have some resources lined up, a DIY skimmer is about the same as well.

But take your time, there's alot more that needs to be taken into consideration about a larger tank than a smaller one.

I say if you're wanting to upgrade to a "go big and stay big" tank you'll have for quite a while, then anything between 120 and 180 gallons would be good. At around 180 gallons, equipment and other goodies and costs tend to exit the realm of "aquarium normal" and enter the realm of "you paid WHAT for WHAT???" ;)

Also checkout various forums, there is always someone selling their complete setup, whether they are getting out of the hobby, or simply moving, or downsizing. youcan get great deals. I got a complete 133 gal swtup for $500, had to do some work to it, but could not have gotten it any other way, would have costed me a pretty penny.

    Hey Pip

You cant have them to big, thats my opinion
to deep - yes that could be a problem - lighting, reaching, placing, cleaning etc

once you get to the 150 gallons - the option of fish you can keep increases as do the numbers of them

Good luck with it anyway Pip, hope you realise your ambition

and dont forget to post a thread about it when you start setting it up

    Steve
