Picked up a great Bubble Magus protein skimmer which I just added to my new and improved sump. It's a 29g with two baffles on the skimmer side. Yes only two baffles--the 14 inch depth really takes care of the bubbles. Much bigger fuge with chaeto.

    Looks good Mulder

are you confident that in the event of a power out
there is enough room left in the sump/ fuge to accommodate the resulting extra water from your DT

Yeah, it's been tested--it only adds about an inch of water because my return is very close to the surface of the water.

I don't know--the first time I put it in there it sank right away.

You can try squeezing it underwater to get any bubbles out.

I don't want to hijack but I'm going to anyways... In the event of a power outage there really shouldn't be much of an issue in a standard sump. As a result of the power outage (if your just using a standard gravity overflow) the return pump will die and stop pumping water back to the DT thereby stopping flow into and out of the DT. You would have to have a pretty powerful pump and a low flow overflow to drive your DT water level high enough over the overflow level to make a significant difference in your sump.

My tank is a 75 gal RR. Let's say that my water level in my DT overtaxes my overflow by about 1/8". So 48" x 18" x 1/8" of water would be over my overflow level giving me 108 Cu. In. of water which converts to 0.46 gal.

Now, I don't have my tank setup yet but does that seem accurate?

    Am I wrong here?

That's not the issue. Return lines in the tank siphon water out back to the sump when the return pump is unplugged or power is lost.

Now I see! So a check valve on your return line would solve that. Thanks for the clarification!
