I am currently running a Corallife Superskimmer 65g on my 40b and soon I will be moving in to the 72 bow front. I been wondering if I should upgrade my skimmer or not. It is slightly undersized for the 72g tank. I got to buy new lights and really don't want to invest so much so fast, but if you need it you need it.
    Opinions on that?

i think you will be ok for a little bit but definitely look at upgrading sooner than later.

I would go with a skimmer upgrade. What kind of lights are you getting? I have 2 lumenmax reflectors with 175 x 2 ballast I'm trying to sell.

I ran the same skimmer in same tank as you & it worked fine for long time. Not great skimmers but they work. I would go for lights.

Unless you're adding a lot more livestock, the skimmer will work just fine. The "tank size" rating leaves a lot to be desired; the extra water won't magically increase the bioload.

Not sure about adding a lot more life stock, I thought about another fish or 2 and some Corals, I want to eventaully put a RBA in there. I am going to get rid of 2 of my fast spreading Corals.

I could never get that skimmer to pull consistent skimmate in my 46BF. Replaced it with an Eshopps PSK-100H and am a million times happier with it! If you have the money, I would suggest upgrading. If you don't and it is working properly, then you should be fine until you can afford to upgrade.

Run for a start, then after you get the lights you want, you can save up and get a nicer skimmer. I always tell my friends to oversize slightly. So, for a 72g, I'd suggest something rated for 100 gallons.

I think it's just my imagination, but it seems as if my skimmer has not been as effective since I placed it in the sump compared to when I had it hanging on the back. The collection time has gone from about every 4 days when hanging on the back to about every 2 weeks since in the sump. At the same time though it seems what I am collecting is heavier and darker skimmate.
I don't know, maybe I can just replace the ballast, other than being hot the lighting seems to do quite good.

heavier and darker = better skimmate.

    what's your current light fixture?
