I can't believe it. I just picked up a used coralife super skimmer 65 from eBay for $30. Didn't realize how big it would be! I hooked it up and although its a bit loud it seems to be working. It's pulled out very dark green liquid. Maybe 1/2 a cup?
Before the skimmer, my Duncan's and palys were always sort of closed. Now they look great!! My toadstools have all their polyps out too. I'm amazed!
I also got a reef octopus bh2000 that should be here tomorrow, so I'm hoping that one will be quieter. Can't believe I waited this long to get a skimmer! This isn't a coincidence right?

It sounds like a fairly short period of time since you got the skimmer? I would have thought it would take a while to show improvement in corals, but I'm a nube so learning something every day.

Sounds about right. All that gunk has been floating in your tank so if I was a coral id be pretty happy too. Congrats.

My tanks are as clean as can be with no nitrates or phosphates and my softies have grown like crazy. Never heard of corals liking a dirty tank??

Probably a bit of a placebo effect, but it will certainly help long term.

Goniopora, and most softies prefer a little bit of phosphates. Even SPS and LPS grow faster with phosphates at 0.5.

that being said, having 0 phosphates doesn't hurt.

OP, same thing happened to me once I got my skimmer, within 12 hours corals were open much more.
