I finally bought an ro/di unit. My tank is in rough shape. The water is a green cloudy color, to the point where I could hardly see the back wall. Anyways, my question is: What's the max water change I could do without killing anything, but get rid of the phosphate. I've got a 60g tank with enough live rock, protein Skimmer, 2 fish, 3 soft coral and 5 or 6 snails. I am also running Gfo in my filter until i get a low enough phosphate reading. I just got the BRS 75 plus ro di unit and I'm excited to get it right. Any help would be great. Thx

I would do 25% every few days, rather than just one large WC. I would also continue using the GFO indefinitely, and do WC's on a regular basis. Just because you will be using RO/DI does not mean that you no longer have a source of phosphate. There is likely phosphate in your fish food, fish waste, etc.

You might want to look for other sources of phosphate as well....ro water is a HUGE help and a must do...but for your water to be so green...I am worried that is not your
It only problem. how is your temp? Is your tank getting direct sun light at all?

No direct sunlight at all. My heat is at 78. I feed very little, but dose once a week with calcium, then alkalinity and also reef plus. I moved 2 tanks around 2 yrs ago and basically did 75% w/c to both tanks. They both went green right away (well water) but the fresh water tank cleared up a month later. That was 2 years ago and the saltwater tank is still greenish. I finally got an ro di unit. This may sound stupid but I even took all coral and fish out and shocked it with chlorine. A week later it was green again. I even removed all substrate. If you think anything else could be causing this please let me know. Thanks

green water kind of sounds like algae going sexual and spreading like crazy. You said your gfo was in your filter, like a hob aquaclear filter or you have it fluidized in a phosban reactor or such?

Lastly you shocked your tank with chlorine? please explain what you did here.

Gfo's in my aquaclear 300 with some carbon. I premixed a spoon full of chlorine about 6 mths back and dumped it in. After it all evaporated I put my coral and fish back in. That's the only time in the last 2 yrs I saw the back glass. All these years of putting off buying an ro/di unit haven't paid off. This is my last option. If I can't get a clear tank this time around, it will be up for sale.

You could try a UV Sterilizer.. I can put money on it that it would clear it up after 4-5+ days. But thats my IMO. :p
