It is a dry heat, yeah right !
I always start low with monitpora, they do pale easily, mod flow.

In my experience I have never seen an montipora actively feed, my best guess is they need very fine particles of zooplankton or perhaps a slurry of fine sea food meats.

Basically though if lighting is adequate you need not worry about supplemental feedings.

Should they always be kept low or just for acclimation?

it depends on the mont your are getting, for example i have a confuse and a spongodes at the very top of my tank, a Sunset and Red cap in the mid of the tank and a Blue Polyped Cap at the bottom. but they all started at the bottom over a month time i slowly moved them up to where i wanted them.

What about a Grape and orange-red monti? Both are at the top of my tank, have good PE and are growing, but they don't appear to be as colorful as they could be.

It really does come down to what type of lighting the Montipora was under and whether it was shippped.

Over time you will see tons for threads "Why did my monti bleach", " Monti loosing tissue", most of the time people got them and placed them up high right off the bat, usually moving them down will help them recover.

Understandably so everyone wants to glue down or epoxy their monti at time of introduction and this is probably part of the issue. You can not really go wrong with acclimating at a lower level and you can bleach the corals going too high initially.

    + 1 to Corailline

most important know how much light your mont can handle. Grape and red caps are low to med light
