    Hey all,
It's been a while since I last posted. I was really busy working trying to get my business off the ground. But anyway, My gf and I went to my local fish guy today just to have a look around and maybe pick up a sixline but I came home with much more lol.
I got two finger leathers, a pink and yellow, a carpet nem and a small colony of blue mushrooms. As well as two blue damsels (I couldn't go home without at least one fish)
This is my first time with leathers and I basically have no idea what I'm doing.
The LFG said that they don't require a lot of light so I made up my mind to put them in my reef tank being fed by natural tropical sunlight. He said that my halides would be too much for it. I did some research on my phone while I was at his place just to make sure he was right about the lighting. I came across some websites that said that they do not require strong lighting and others that said that they do require strong lighting. So I don't know which is true.
Secondly, I placed my colony of blue mushrooms in my tank with halides and w/o a chiller. Should I move them over to sunlight tank (because it's peak temp during the day is 81F) until I get a chiller?
Last but not least, i got home to do my research on the carpet nem, I see that it is not very favorable due to it's bad rep of nuking tanks, stinging coral and eating fish. (this I did not know since all the carpets in his tanks were being hosted by clowns). I have the nem under the halides which I assume is adequate lighting for them but my temp rises to 85F during my 6-8hr halide schedule. Is this too hot? Should I move this over t the sunlight tank as well?
BTW, It's hurricane season now so most of the day it's overcast. Could this be dangerous?
I apologize for the long post but I just wanted to cover everything in one shot. But here are a few pics for your patience and for a proper ID as well. I have no Idea of their correct name.
I will take more and better pics in the morning. Lights are out now.;)

As far as the natural lighting I can't help. But if you do go that route I would keep the MH lights on stand by. Just keep an eye on them and change lighting if needed. I like the fact you are willing to try out something new especially since you live in a good natural light area.

Dont move the nem to the natural tank, it wont have enough or strong enough lite IMO, and the leathers will be fine in the nartural lite tank, they require very little lite to survie.

my tank gets both 400m mhs 20k and natural light and my leathers do great!!!! keep them at the lower part of the tank and they should do great under mh. as for my nem he walked to where the natural and mh are the strongest and hasent moved from that spot.

Okay good that takes the weight off of my shoulders and makes tomorrow a much easier day. I will leave everything as it is. I may move the mushrooms to the natural light tank though. It depends on how they look in the morning.
Was anyone able to correctly identify the types of leathers those two are?
    thanks

They are beautiful siddique. I'm a little concerned about the first one (pink) being dyed

Thanks Daniel, I was reading that somewhere last night that people would sometimes dye these leathers. The color would eventually fade but it poses no threat to the coral and/or other aquarium live. (at least that is what I read);)
However, I woke up this morning to find that the pink one looks a bit deflated. It looks flat rather than errected like how it was yesterday and last night. Could this possibly be because of the sunlight being too dull or too bright? My water parms seem perfect. I'm really worried about it dying.

    hey Siddique

I have 2 leathers in my current set up and have had a few on previous set ups

typically - mine are open/ extended during the day and after the lights have been out a while they retract the polps and the whole coral shrinks
the following day, before the lights come on, they are normally in the process of expanding again

periodically they dont open during the day, they stay closed and can remain closed for 2,3, 4 days ( one of mine was closed up for 6 days and is great now)

they do shed skin - it facilitates growth
they tend to get a hard look to them and sometimes it gets shiney

get a photo up if your overly concerned

but IME , dont worry for a few days if your coral does not open fully
if your sure the water quality is OK and your other corals are doing well

this is probably just what I described above

    Steve

Thank You Steve. As I'm doing some more reading, I'm not worries as much. I also think that the deflation may have been caused by a stupid aptasia nem touching the leather. I moved the leather further away from the aiptasia. I will be ordering some aiptasia x today. My tank is being over run by it now. It's really a pain.
I still took a couple pix just to be certain that I have nothing to worry about.

well second opinions are always welcome round here

but to me that looks like typical shut down/ deflate and it will inflate again when its ready
