On the sand is where it should be, feed it a mysis shrimp or something similar every week or two.

Yea target feed it some mysis or something like that. I feed mine at night when just moon lights are on and current is on night mode (low current). you'll see the brain fold around the food pushing the food to its mouth ITS REALLY COOL!

Get your pictures up and we can give you a little more informed answers. I have a rather large one, its sitting about midway up on the rocks in my tank but it sits under a ledge so its really shaded pretty well. ( I have 8-54 watt t5's) I've had it for about 1.5 ears and it was about 3" across when I got it.

I target feed is 1 cut up medium Frozen or fresh shrimp at least 2 times a week. it started out looking like what you are describing, a little bit of skeleton showing but after 1.5 years of feeding and care here is what I have.

And here is a picture that gives you a better idea where it's located in my tank.

    Thanks for the complements.

Yours actually looks pretty good, and no worries on the skeleton on the bottom, that's normal. But placement concerns me.

I would maybe try to get it in a bit more shaded spot, like where your thermometer fell to if it will fit. then watch it and see if it puffs up when lights come on. if not move it out a little bit. They cannot handle bright light to well.
