You need an ATO system if you plan on keeping acros.

I've been keeping them successfully without one for 6-7 months, but that's a moot point. I am in the process of installing a sump that has an ATO float pre-drilled into it. It should be wet by the weekend.

This incident arose from shipping and manifested itself when I left town on short notice.

Gosh, most of the time when I have seen this, it is caused by alk burn. Have you checked the corals for parasites. I've really never seen redbugs kill a coral but it's a possibility. Could be an issue with flow as well but those are all just guesses.

Every other piece seems fine. I don't see any bugs and I think flow is alright (57x tank volume). I think the shipping damage and subsequent water decrease/bubble brought me to this point.

It was my favorite piece, so I hope it pulls through.

I went ahead and fraged it into 4 pieces. Hopefully one of them makes it. I didn't see anyway the original piece came back from the state it was in.

Naw, it was proabably best to frag it! Good call. Sometimes, with acros, this type of thing just happens we don't know why

Yeah, it's frustrating. Surprisingly, it's the first SPS that I have had that really took a turn for the worse like this (I have several). Every coral I have/have had, is still alive in my tank. They may grow at a snails pace and be pretty bland, but nothing ever seems to bleach or lose tissue; everything lives.

I guess that's a good thing. Hopefully this one follows suit. I read that it's a very difficult piece to keep, so I won't be surprised if I lose it, just disappointed. This is a piece I've wanted for awhile.

Have you dipped it yet? You can use airline tubing to siphon any dying/necrotic tissue and then you may want to give the coral a dip in an Iodine solution like Pro Coral cure to help prevent further deterioration.
