It is a good habit to get in to of putting the conditioner in before you add the water. You never know when your water will have an extra slug of chlorine or you get distracted and for get to add the conditioner and the fish dies from destroyed gills.

I have an old cooler that I use for water changes. I use it to syphon the dirty water into then dump it and fill it up with water and conditioner to re add. This way you can check the temp b4 hand also and make sure it's not too hot or cold too. You can also use your gravel syphon to syphon the new water back in, this doesn't disturb the fish, won't mess up your deco, and there are no spills ;)
