I have a whole house surge protector on my panal box but I still use individual surge protectors on any expensive equipment in the house (i.e. TV's, computers). I just picked up a new power strip today for my main pump since I'd hate to have my Barracuda get fried by a power surge.

I use a surge protected extention lead with RCD to protect myself from broken equipment and stray voltage.

Surge on electronic equipment like controllers, analyzers and electronic ballasts. Pumps are not as sensitive and don't really need it. Put everything on a GFCI circuit though!

    GFCI is a must!

I don't use surge protectors for my tank.

All sensitive electronic equipment should be on a good surge protector, not a cheap plug strip. No different that a computer or audio visual equipment. My controller is $350, I'm going to protect it the best I can.

I don't have a controller. If I did I would put it on a surge protector as well.
