Planted tanks can get more complicated... additives for the plants, CO2, and you can't get fish that would eat the plants. Of course, you're limited in fish type in a 10 gallon anyway.

If you've kept reef tanks, you probably won't believe how easy it is to keep a freshwater system going. I've kept tanks running for years devoting nothing more than 30 min every week for water changes, and maybe an hour or so every month to clean out the filter and replace media.

Nothing like live rock for freshwater tanks. You don't use more than 10X flow. Driftwood is good, it will tint the water yellow to a very light brown.
Always clean anything going into a tank.

Your lft should have rock and drift wood that you would be able to use. Drift wood you will have to let it sit in some water so it can get water logged. Rock just give a good cleaning and add to the tank.

Ive been running a 75 gallon freshy tank for 2 years now, depending on desired look, you can get normal decor rock or..lfs sell like a crushed rock like sand. i use the crushed rock easier to clean and fish love to move it around. Filter wise i would stay away from undergravel filters, you can get a small HOB filter from wal-mart and it runs just as good for a 10 gallon, i normally change filter pad once a month, and do a 25% water change. Lighting is all up to you, as far was powerheads i never used one. i just got a air pump with air stone and just made bubbles to get oxygen in tank, and adds some look to fresh tank. other then that it will run itself with little maintence. when i add water, i just got to petsmart and get the Ammonia Clear tablets that removes all the harmeful stuff like chlorine and stuff from the water. But if you have any questions you can PM me ive had about every freshwater fish that LFS can carry lol. Dont be shy to PM me
