Sorry, I forgot to mention if the heater is set to 77 the water still reaches 81-82. I had my heater set to 79 and the tank averaged 81-82. So from what I understand there is no issue. It is winter currently and the apartment is fluctuating between 67 and 73. During summer the apartment is kept at 65-70 max.

Right, what you describe sounds like the water temp is being set by the lighting, not the heater. i.e. the lights are off, the temp drops a bit, and comes on, goes up? If so, I'm not sure what benefit setting the heater lower would do? Shackman23 usually post good advise, but I am completely missing hos point on this one. Maybe he was tired or had a great point that he did not explain well, i don't know :) However, from what your describing, it seems to me that setting the heater lower, should result in a larger, not smaller swing.

I would personally turn the heater up a bit if it's winter. Just because, as I hinted at, this gives you more of a buffer in the event of a power failure.

For this reason, I like to keep my tanks in the lower 80's in winter and upper 70's in summer. I do like some variation though for the reasons mentioned previously, but I respect that not everyone agrees with that.

Add a sump. I had to on my 12 gal nanocube dx. My temps were reaching 85.. It was horrible.

Your welcome :) Also, in the summer, just pick up something like one these (or maybe two even) and point it at the water surface. A few can easily drop the temp 5 degrees or more IME.

Would this fan fit in the BioCube 29? And if so where would
    I put it?

I am not really the best person to ask about biocubes. That was just an example, I would think you could, but I am not very familiar with the BCs. I think there are some retrofit fan kits, although I notice a lot of people with biocubes running chillers, so maybe it's tough to fit a fan in one? Hopefully someone else has an idea.

The only reason i said turn it down, was b/c with my past experience with the biocubes, is that they hold heat very well, and as it retains the heat it rises, so during the night it would drop down to what he lowered the heat 2 and when the lights kicked on he would get a few degree change, and by "turn it down" i didnt mean like completely down he knew what i meant if he keeps it lets say at 75, the max temp he will reach if he stays on the same course would be around 80 or maybe 78-79 which in my experience is a little better. Although there is a HUGE debate on what temp your tank should really be at, and the ocean does flucuate (SP) its not a whole 5 degree's every day which can shock fish/coral, more so fish, and i do understand that fish can get used to it but if it keeps on the trend its on now, in the summer it could hit a really high number if he leaves for a few hrs and doesnt have time to watch it. i wouldnt want that for anyone losing fish is hard and expensive sorry for the confusion

Interesting, I've never seen a tank react like that, but Biocubes seem to have their quirks, so could idk.

Otherwise, I think we are on the same page ideally a lower swing would be better. IME 2-4 is not an issue at all though, but 5 certainly might be getting up there. For a while after I graduated college, I had a 20g, with LPS, SPS and a few clams that huge swings every day in the winter, because the landlord set the heat and kept it absurdly cold. A 250W heater could only keep it at about 76, but it had a closed top to keep the bicolor blenny from jumping and once the 150MH came on, it was liek a greenhouse and jumped up to 82+ Surprisingly everything was happy and grew quite well though...

Still, I think 80+ is still better in the winter for other reasons mentioned.
