    I'm listening

    Fish-aholic 94:

Thanks for your posts. Yes, I'm watching/listening. I'm a noob and interested in saltwater reef aquariums. I have some experience with aquariums, mostly freshwater. I tried a small (~20gal) saltwater tank once with a few fish and live rock. Didn't last very long. Didn't have access to support forums back in the early 80's. My lfs was not much help. Now that I'm older and the kids are out of the house, I'm exploring my options.

The 29gal biocubes intrigue me. Same with the RedSea 34gal. Bottom line for me is how to have the maximum amount of water for an aquarium. A sump/refugium would hold more water to get the full water use around 50 gal.

While considering all of this, I tell myself that a larger tank is the better solution. But, with larger tanks come higher expenses.

My goal? nice reef with just a few fish. I would pay more for a nice looking pair of perculas than mediocre ones from the lfs.

The negatives are daily time to care for the smaller tanks. Okay at first, but becomes a chore after several months. Also taking a week vacation means how do I care for the tank?

But, you have my attention with the 30gal models shown here. Nice display.

    So, I'm listening!

I recently set up a 1.5g pico. I just put some frags from my 72g in there.
    -orange monti
    -2 heads of green palys
    -2 frags of gsp
    -kenya tree
    -green striped mushroom
    -4 purple mushrooms.

-also added a nassarius obsoleta, couple ceriths, a few hitchhiking stomatellas, about 200 asterinas (not by choice, I picked out some of my more purple rocks but they were covered in coralline eating asterinas) and one blue leg hermit.

Tank is going on 2 weeks and no issues yet. For lighting I have a 9w coralife 50/50 bulb with a cheap hardware store reflector fixture. The 1.5g kit came with a 9 led fixture that is rediculously dull. I have it on before and after the 50/50 bulb pointing directly at a wad of chaeto. I am using the stock whisper 1-3g internal filter. Would like to add a very tiny powerhead. I have a 1g jug above the tank dripping 1 drop every 4 seconds of RO water. Even without the ato, it only loses anout 1/4" of water within 24hours because of the plastic top.

This is a pic the day I set it up without the light on.

    Hi moose
    I’m glad someone is listening.
My first saltwater tank was a 20-gallon tall.
    I had a 55-gallon for a while, but I like my 10-gallon better.
I have a diy fuge, and a hob filter, to trap partials in the water.
The only thing I do is daily top offs; make sure all my pups are working, and a 1-gallon water change once a week.
When I go off for a week, I feed the fish really good. And my lights are on a timer, some water does evaporate, but not enough to hurt anything.

I’m not familiar with biocubes, but I wouldn’t get one.
The main reason is, if you ever wanted to upgrade, or (I hope this never happens) if the tank cracks/brakes, you would have to get all new, filters, and pumps; because most of the equipment in biocubes are part of the tank.
I would buy an empty tank, and then buy your equipment separate, or a kit.
If you upgrade, then you can use your old stuff.

    New nano

I just got a Nano for Christmas. 12g. Am really looking forward to doing this. I have never had one this small. My first was a 35 hex. I would like to have at least 1 fish and haven't decided what just yet. Haven't put water in it yet, so I have lots of time to think about it.
