Most likely, it got stuck in a molt. This happens very often and I've lost 2 mantis myself because of it :(

I wonder if this happens as often in nature as it does in our tanks. If not, there must be something missing in our tanks that they needto have a successful molt every time. Anybody know?

Sorry to hijack but they can get stuck in a molt? Don't really know much about mantis. Does the old shell fail to crack open or how does that work and can it happen to other molting creatures?

They have problems in nature too.... not sure if it's more frequent in our tanks though.

Unfortunately, my favorite species (Odontodactylus scyllarus or peacock mantis) is more susceptible to bad molts than other species.

Any animal with an exoskeleton can have problem molts.

no problem dude. better to learn from others mistakes than your own. dont know if this was my fault or not but i do miss the little guy. im not sure how they get out of the old shell. they kinda shut them selves in their den till the old shell is off and the new one is hard then they come back out.

i looked him over real good when i pulledd him out and didnt look like he was molting, no holes in the shell, no limbs missing, no bite marks or anything so i dont know what really happend to him.

anyway im looken at getting either a g smithii or a peacock mantis its a 30 gal tank so i can have either one. ill prob up grade the lighting a little bit also so i can keep some soft corals in there.

thanks for all the comments too!
