Hello to all, my fellow reef hobbyist!
Do any of you know, what’s the smallest tank that is made that has an overflow? Or I should ask. Are 40 gal longs or 30 gal longs available with overflows built in?
I can’t find any and I don’t want a custom tank built for me.
I am in the process of putting the proper stuff together so I can jump back into the hobby! After MUCH thinking, ~and I’m never done with that~ I may have come to the decision that I would like a 30 gal long reef tank. I found the tank, it’s 4 ft long, which is nice. I’m looking into buying LEDs from RapidLEDs.com OR buying the Eco Tech Radion LEDs…1 or 2 of them.
I’m also looking into buying a Tunze Silence pump for the sump.
For my water flow in the tank I have Koralia evolution 750 & 1,400. I’m looking into buying the smart wave to run these two.
Since I can’t find a 40 breeder or 30 long in any size that has an overflow, I guess I must drill the tank myself. Didn’t really want to do this. So, I will now also be building a stand for the tank that will hide 1 or both sides, so people won’t see the pluming coming out the sides of the tank.
My drawings for the system look really good. The tank will only be viewable from the front, unless I make one side have the drain and return.
Now, I’m looking into a protein skimmer too. I’ve heard good things about the Hydor slim skim. Your thoughts on that??
Oh, I should say. This tank will be a reef tank with 3 MAYBE 4 fish, that’s it! I want a low bio-load.
I LOVE big tanks, but I don't think anything bigger than a 75 would be appropiate for my house. But, I don't really have the money do spend on a 75 gal with stand.

    Your thoughts?

I have a 40 gallon breeder with a glass-holes.com 700gph overflow already installed. Tank is like new. PM if your interested.
I would say go with a reef octo skimmer. And i just sold my smart wave hydor controller i hated it. I would go with 2 vortech mp10s.
and for leds, you could get a reefbreeders for more then half the price of a eco tech!

Thank you! May I ask why you hated your hydor smart wave controlloer? The vortech mp10s seem really nice, but they are a lot of money.

I have a Hydor Smart Wave and don't have any issues with it :-/ Works exactly as expected, and I got it for under $50 :)

Why not drill the tank yourself and add a DIY overflow?

I might do that. I've never drilled a tank before and I don't want to mess up. I've seen people do it and it doesn't seem that hard. How do you add a DIY overflow? I see people drill holes, then just have PVC pipes in the holes, not an overflow like one sees in the RR tanks.

There is so much to learn in this hobby and for my two cents, you'd do well to buy an existing system that is already designed for what you want to do if you can find it. It will save you money and you can concentrate on the other elements once you have the basic set up.
