whether or not to get the hippo tang is up to you, but I will throw in my two cents. If you do choose to get one, you will need a quarantine tank. Most fish, especially tangs, will get stressed from being shipped or transported or even just arriving to the lfs. This can cause ich and other diseases. Tangs seem to be particularly susceptible to ich.
As to the size, I have seen them as small as 3/4 of an in. at lfs. They would be fine for a while, but remember, even at half of their size, about 6", they will start to outgrow the tank, especially with lots of rock in there.

I disagree with you. It's not the size of the fish, it's the room it needs to swim. Tangs are open water swimmers and they need tons of room to exercise. Tangs kept in small tanks such as a 55 have been known to grow with deformaties sp? in their bone and muscle structure. This is a bad idea and I would never do it.
