Your tank looks great. I have been looking at doing other more natural setups. I think biological based systems are better in the long run... but that does not mean more mechanical ones do not work well.

You will have to show me your source that says live rock based systems are bad.

It is not a secret that mechanical filtration is a good thing. Plenty of people employ filter socks. Skimmers are nothing but a mechanical skimmer. Bottom line is removing waste before it is broke down to lesses the load on the filtration system.

Using bacteria to reduce waste to basic components and moping those components up with macro algae has been done for quite some time now. There have been various boxes made to accomplish that. I happen to like yours.

I think your system is great and I dig anyone that puts a lot of time and effort and thought into their stuff.... but not everyone can or wants to do that. People can uses well tested designs to afford them a convenient way to enjoy a reef. Most folks I have met in the industry are the same as you... very passionate people that care about what they are doing and try to come up with something to advance this hobby.... and this hobby has most certainly been advanced by some of those people. I see no evil intention or harm done that they also make a buck from it.

I guess I'm just saying that I don't see the industry as some evil empire duping unsuspecting people out of their money when they know their stuff sucks. Nor do I see those people using that equipment and running very succssesful reefs with it as uninformed victims.

Thanks for sharing a great alternative.

You loose me on the 24 hrs of light though... a light dark cycle is the most natural of all cycles in all of nature. We can simulate dusk and dawn and have soft start lights so it isn't too abrupt... but I don't see how anyone can make a case that 24 hr. light cycles are better for natural creatures.
