    hey guys,
so i just bought a clamp on metal halide light unit. It has a 150w metal halide globe and two sets of LEDS. I plugged it all in and the ballast lights light up along with the switches. I turned on the lamp switch and the MH didn't light up but the LEDS did. So i waited... because i think i read somewhere that MH's take a while to get going but nothing happened after 15mins so i switched it all off. I left it for an hour or so.
I than turned it back on again and the LEDS turned on again, i waited a few seconds this time and switched it off, when i switched it off, the MH globe exploded. Did i do something wrong?

The whole fixture is new, including the bulb, i just got it in the post. What part might be faulty?

What brand light fixture was it? Was it a kit, or did you order the ballast, bulb and reflector seperately? Did you confirm that the bulb was the correct wattage for your lamp and ballast?

Yeah it was a kit, everything included, all put together before i got it. Just clamp it on the tank and away you go... or so i thought. It didnt come with instructions.
I guess im wondering is there some sort of start up procedure u need to do with metal halide lamps? or anything special u are meant to do when you first use it? i just thought plug it in and it lights up... true?

Should be just a plug and play fixture so yes it should just turn on (the delay is that the bulb is supposed to take a few minutes to warm up but you should see light right away). Gonna ask a dumb question but the fixture didn't get wet or anything right? Also I would make sure the ballast / bulb are matched as well.

What brand is the retro , Can you post a photo of the ballast and all the wiring ? Where did it come from I have seen a few pieces of retro Junk sold on Flea Bay That I would not give away let alone sell .
If you have a brand name then I could find a schematic to see if its wired properly . What Mfu capacitor was supplied with this fixture ?

Thanks guys :) The light was already in the fixture when it came. It had some foam padding around it which i took out. That's all i really did, take the foam out and plug it in.
Thanks for your thoughts, i wanted to get some feed back before i contact the retailer. Didnt want him to say something like "but did you give the ballast time to warm up" or something like that which i might have overlooked :)

Im really just hoping its a faulty bulb so i dont have to send the whole unit back.

Sounds like a bad capacitor to me... seeing as your bulb exploded when you killed power.
