My first reef tank WOOT WOOT!!!

    I personally would ditch any Hang on filters and do a sump with refugium instead if you want a reef...it will be much healthier and easier for you when all said and done.

    I agree with this. But when first starting out, it can seem daunting to install a sump/refugium. When I first started, I used all HOB equipment, then after about a year, decided to add a sump/refugium b/c I felt it would benefit my tank more, which IMO, it has. Unless you have somebody guiding you step by step who is knowledgeable in reef tanks, or are just smart and hands on, HOB may be better initially. It's easy to setup and you can learn water chemistry, care requirements, maintenance etc. then upgrade to a better filter, meaning a refugium.

    It took me about 5 months of research and planning to get my sump/ref set up. Maybe that's a little long but I did it right the first time. I am only saying this because this is my first reef tank and it was daunting to learn every little piece. If you choose to do this make sure you do ALL your homework and ask a bazillion questions like I did on this forum - everybody here is extremely helpful and probably saved me a bunch of cash in the process. :)
