Getting totally confused now. It's like starting new again. :-/

Thought the cycle was moving along excellently because of the sand/rock I added from my 46. Then I got some very weird test results and realized that the kit I was using had been open for over a year. So I scrapped all my notes, got a new master kit, (API, not wasting hard earned mulah on cycle tests) retested and found a little NH3, more NO2 than I assumed and just around 5ppm NO3. The diatoms were getting into full swing also.
    That was 4 days ago....
    Today I test
    NH3 0
    NO2 .5 ppm
    NO3 0
The diatoms are so bad now I cant see through the glass. So my only assumption is that NO2 is falling and the diatoms are consuming the NO3 before my kit can detect it...

Diatoms usually mean big nitrate explosion and cycle nearing the end. So it is possible the diatoms are consuming all the nitrates. Wait until the diatoms go away and test again. :)

    Getting soooo close!!

Alright! Tested tonight and have 0's (for sure this time) all the way across the board. I don't have anymore pure ammonia to add so I'm thinking I'll just do a 50% w/c and get a crew in there. I'll feed the Nass. some mysis and hope for the best. If it all goes well I'll have the first school of fish ordered within a week.
Now, just to get a hold of Maloney so I can recover my log in info and get the stuff in my cart ordered. :)

It's done! I can't believe that next week there will be actual living creatures in this tank. ;D
    Ordered
    85 dwarf ceriths
    30 Florida ceriths
    25 Nass. Vibex
    15 Large Nerites

    and for the sump

Not looking forward to packing 45 gallons of water to the shop to do a w/c though. :(

    Thanks!

The only concern I have at the moment is there is another type of algae growing on the glass (and the scape too I'm sure, just can't see it) that I've never seen in any of my cycling salt tanks. I can't even get a pic for ID because the diatoms are built up so thick on the glass. But from what I can tell is this un-ID'd type has a central base, 3 stems and fern like "leaves". My first thought was gawd no! Bryopsis! but I don't have it in any of my systems that I transferred sand/rock from to contaminate the new tank.
