Yes, you want a straight shot down to the sump. Ideally you want the water to cling to the sides of the drain hose or pipe. This will keep a "tube" of air flowing at all times.

And while you're at it, it that tank was mine, I'd put a herbie overflow on the back side. The holes are there, plus you have the space.

He can not do a herbie on that tank. Herbies are designed for reef ready tanks with holes in the bottom. He would have to drill another hole and do a bean animal, but he has no overflow box.

Not to be debbie downer, but a 2 durso standpipe setup is obsolete imo. It will never be a quiet setup the way it is.

    Ok, I confused the two.

Right, but he can install one of the back. Have the box outboard of the tank. It would need vertical support so it doesn't torque the back glass.

I think Sanjay Joshi has something like this. I could be wrong.

Yeah, it's really loud, and I wish I hadn't done it that way. Do you think it would quiet down if I built overflow boxes around them?

You could put a Gl******* box in each of the holes.

Which one should I buy? All I really need is the box, so maybe I could see if anyone locally has one they want to get rid of.

I believe you have done a great job with your tank. I am impressed with those teenagers who have started in the hobby and how impressive their tanks are.
