Putting together live rock can be like putting together a puzzle. You just move it around until the pieces "fit" together, mainly by stacking it and making it stable. However, you can use zip ties or underwater epoxy to hold the rocks in the positions you want them to be in, rather than the positions they want to be in. We used this stuff called "marine stick" or something like that we found at the LFS. Worked ok. It's like mighty putty, except mighty putty kind of flakes off and gets annoying until it dries underwater. But it works too.

And a protein skimmer essentially removes dissolved food and dissolved poop from the water. You know they are amazing once you smell the collection cup. One of the worst smells out there IMO. You know when someone blows a bubble with soap and water, the outside of the bubble looks all colorful and shiny? That's the soap. So when the bubble pops, the soap is liquified right? It's the same concept with a protein skimmer. The microbubbles it creates "pop" sending waste and stuff "yurtle the turtle" style up to the collection cup, where it pops into it over time. The bubbles carry the ickyness upwards so your fish don't have to drink and breathe it.
