So I'm moving out of Mommy's onto bigger and better things. Yay for adulthood! So I have 2 tanks, a 20 gallon reef, and a 5.5 gallon "tide pool". I'm pretty sure I've got the moving part actually down from what I've read on here.

Bright side?! There's already a 20 gallon tank, with a 20 gallon sump, with a stand, where I'm going!

The plan is to put the tide pool (with the mantis) into the sump, keep it planted, etc. Then the reef in the display! But I have a few questions for the lovelies of 3reef!

1: Can I rinse and use the sand from both tanks in the new setup?

2: The goal is to use as much original water as possible, but would I benefit from doing a WC before the move?

    3: Tips from anyone?!

You don't need to rinse the sand, just drop it in. That's what I always do. Also watch the parameters and I'd do a small change within a week even if you don't see anything (to help prevent any ammonia from showing up that may have).

    I just successfully moved. A 125,75,2x55s,a 29, 2x10s, and 4.

    All survived.

Your smallest tank can be drained down to 2 gallons and just leave the corals in there if any. If you attached them to the rock then you may put the rocks in the bucket of water.

Stick your tank on your seat and don't drive jerky.

As do the other tank I would get a tote and put the rock and animals in that and leave just enough water to submerge the sand.

You can do it all in one trip.

My water got down to 44 degrees and all my fish lived. I had to bust my butt upping the temps from there but t was all well after the rush.

Your experience will be much easier!

is it a deep sand bed? if so i think mixing it all up would be bad for your new set up.

Well, I'm actually physically changing tanks. I should have taken pictures, but the sump is currently being modified to fit the DSB and the mantis habitat. I kind of have to move the sand. :p

If you have a dsb you may as well rinse it or you may have a toxic explosion in your case.

In the mantis tank there's a 4inch DSB. There's more surface area to cover in the sump, so it'll end up being around 2inches then. So I should be safe rinsing the sand?

If you rinse it in tap make sure to dechlorinate and try to get as much water as you can out.

I always use ro for rinsing.

If you don't want to completely kill your sand you can use water change water or something.

If you rinse it only fill the sand like 4-5 inches in the bucket. Makes it a on easier.
