Me and the lady split and now I have to move to my new place but I'm nervous about moving my tank. Any words of wisdom? (The tank, not women. Lol) My tank has been up a couple of months and has fully cycled. I'm gonna re use a lot of the established water and keep my fish in an airrated bucket for a few hours. I'm gonna keep my live rock nice and moist with a little water. Should I keep the rock submerged or just moist? My other question is should I replace my sand or not? I'd like to keep the live sand that's in there if possible. Thanks guys.

I just did a tank move... across the room and I have to say it was difficult I cant imagine moving to another location. don't do what I did and reuse all of the sand. only use a few cups full. my nitrates are crazy right now. I did 18 gallons of new water the first day and now doing another 10. everything else is ok, but I have a feeling it was the sand.

All the info you need right there. :)

When I purchased and moved my 36g, i left the sand in it with about an inch of water over it. Was heavy and a pita, but my buddy and I managed.

For the live rock most of it went into a rubbermaid with about 3 inches of water over the top. I put a small piece in a 5g bucket with my livestock.

The livestock in the 5g bucket I kept in my passenger front foot well with the heat going (was approx 40*F outside that night)

I put the remaining tank water into 5g buckets and hauled everything over to my place that was about 45 minutes away.

ninja edit: I put a small 50w heater into the livestock bucket as well as an air stone once I was home. It took me about 2h to get the tank setup, plus another hour or so for my heater to bring the tank back up to temp. Not something you want to start doing at 8pm like I did. Put an entire day aside for just the tank move.

when me and the ex split I couldnt move the 75 across country so I sold it for peanuts on the dollar :(
However we did move the 75 across town once and it was a pain but do-able.
We put the fish in 5 gallon buckets
we stacked the rock in 5 gallon buckets wrapped in wet newspaper with lids on where possible.
We put the sand in garbage bags then in a box
you only need to keep 30% of your tank water. Try to stir as little as possible when moving. Don't feed the fish 24 hours prior to the move so they arent pooping in the buckets.
And make sure you have a buddy to help.

Good luck and sorry about the split

I just moved my 40 gallon to a new place across Houston. Maybe it was the wrong thing to do, but I used all my sand. I ended up adding more because I wanted a deep sand bed and that was the opportune time. Personally I went to home depot and bought like 8 buckets with the sealing lids. From then I packed up literally everything down to the water into the buckets. Most all my rocks are covered in sps so just leaving the rocks moist for a few hours wasn't really an option. Then I put my fish in ziplocks with water and stuck them all in a cooler. Kind of a slow process because I did it all myself but it wasn't too difficult. Setting it back it up was kind of a pain though. After I finished I cleaned up all the buckets I'd bought and returned them to home depot and got my cash back lol. So it worked out.

Sorry about the split and the having to move the tank :( Good advice here though, good luck! I'm preparing a major tank overhaul (well, kind of) which will require a lot of work, not looking forward to it.

Thanks guy's, your advice is extremely helpful. I think I have a firm grasp on how I'm gonna do this. Breaking up sucks but this gives me the opportunity to make the tank better. On the good side though a hot girl at petco wants to date. Employee discounts!!! Ha, ha.
