Got a question for everyone. How would you feel about transporting a glass tank long distance in the cold in the back of a pickup.

I need to pick up a new tank, and will be in Winnipeg for New Years Eve (Go LEAFS Go!) I figure the temp will be between -25 to -35 Celsius. I then will be driving home (500 miles).

    Will this shatter the tank?

Will moving it inside cause it to break? Will the silicone be compromised? Will reintroduction to heat cause a crack?

Not sure whether or not to go ahead with this idea or not ... what would you do ?

I would think as long as you let it return to room temp slowly, ie. don't put warm water in it it should be fine. For moving, I'm not sure but the glass would be a little more brittle at such a low temp I would think. I would make sure it is well padded and secured and I would think everything would be okay.

I moved my new 90 in like 35 degree Fahrenheit weather with a light snow, it road home on the back of a car... I was nervous about the temperature. When we brought it inside the glass fogged over. It made it though but your temp will be a lot colder.

Yeah I have moved them in about that temp with no problems ... I'm just worried about extreme cold. -40 Farenheit is what I'll probably be looking at for that time of year here.

I would acclimate it as slowly as possible...a lot of tanks these days have at least one pane that is tempered...that would be my concern. I once had a tempered glass desk literally explode from a sharp increase in temp...thank goodness there was no one in the room at the time.

lol i love how this is being treated as if its an animal

i have a slight idea, why not pack it with snow(if available) because then wouldnt it stay around 32 degrees? :)

one other idea is to maybe pack it with blankets and water bottles of hot water in between the blankets to maybe keep the temperature up a bit?

Those jugs of water may freeze in a 500 mile drive in that temperature. Once you hit a bump that glass will be sure to break.
