I may start 2 species tanks and a sump, I'm doing a mantis tank in I think a 15 (30x12x12) which will tie to the sump I'm building for the DT. My dad wants to try a 2.5 for a dwarf seahorse (maybe a pair). The 2.5 has a built in wet/dry and a light good enough for some hard coral. I have a local supplier of live food for copepods and Brine as well as shrimp to feed the mantis. Since there is so little info on either species, is that adequate (as well as sand, rocks etc.) Or any other info (like the best chiller/powerhead for such a small tank)?

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
While I have never attempted to keep seahorses in a pico (2.5 gallons), I do not believe that is it the appropriate size to attempt to keep seahorses.

There are a couple members that have a lot of knowledge with regard to keeping sea horses.

If you would like them to chime in you should create a thread, regarding seahorse husbandry within the title to get their attention.

I have read that due to a max size of .9" most keep them in a 2-10 depending on how many while larger SHs are at least BioCube size, and which would be the best category for a question like that?
Or are you referring to mantinence of a super small tank plus a Seahorse?

I would put it under the Tropical Fish category. Just include Seahorse in the title.

Also do a search on this forum under general discussion, tropical fish, there is a forum specifically for Seahorses and such, as well as a blog done my a member, whose name escapes me, I think member rayjay and member gazog.

I think 2.5g would be a suitable size tank for dwarf seahorses. They stay very small(as mentioned) and are pretty sedentary, though they do move some.

There s a lot of work that needs to go into having seahorses, but we have much of that info on here. - just use the custom Google search bar at the top right of this website. Others are here to help as well.

3reef.com - Forums for coral reef aquariums, salt water fish, corals, inverts, protein skimmers, aquarium lighting and more - Search

You could also check out Seahorse Organisation. Keeping and Breeding Seahorses in the home aquarium. - which is a forum specificity for the hobby of seahorse care.

I've seen dwarf's kept in small tanks with that. The catch is gonna be alot of horse tanks arent filled with alot of corals. they are a fan of lower low & macro type tanks where they have the ability to use thier tails to hold onto things. this can tend to conflict with the higher flow/turn over rates that corals prefer.

i am far from a sea horse expert, but thats the way I had it explained to me in the past.

+1 about flow rate with some corals.

The tank I don't think has a high flow rate, its a desktop all-in-one made for small fish and has a perfect filter for SW. I plan on a branching coral (maybe) and some thin, grass-like algae. I tried to sign up at the site you mentioned but for some reason don't have access to the dwarf forum. I have also read as much as I can find but it seems both Mantis Shrimp and Dwarf Seahorses are uncommon and generally unknown. Do the Dwarves like sand? And if I get a smasher-type mantis, will I need a DSB? Thanks for all the help. I will try to post some info on the tank and scientific name of the horse (if it makes a difference) to try and make it more understandable.
