I would agree that most of the hobby is male...but not by much. People are often shocked to find out that some of our members they think are male turn out to be female. We have more females on this site than most think.

In fact, it was my mom's idea to get our tanks. I just do the heavy lifting and the tools and plumbing because I have more experience with that sort of thing. But she joined this site before me, and thankfully she's the one that funds the hobby, feeds and doses the tank, tops off, and all that fun stuff. She decides what corals go where yadda yadda yadda.

It all depends on where you are. In my area, it seems to be as many females as males in the hobby. The 20something year old girl at my LFS has a 125 in her living room, and she knows my mom and I by name. She doesn't have a man in her life that prompted the hobby, it was just her. I see women as well as men shopping for tank stuff. That must be unique to my area, but we are definitely the oddball as far as Tennessee's 4 major cities go

My lfs is ran buy a brother and sister 30 miles from me,he runs the store and she runs the reefs,if you ask him about a coral,he'll say" let me go get Pam".I also bought corals today from a woman who i'm good friends with her husband, but he has nothing to do with the hobby or with her wheelin and dealin. But he will help if asked..lol

It seems like on the forums it is mostly males. But this maybe because it truly is, or just that I am male, & naturally would assume most others to be like me? :p

But at my LFS I see males, females, & (not as often)families. Sometimes just couples.

At the larger fish stores there's going to be more variety, so you will notice this more.

A far as employees in the store, It is about half/half. Females usually work the registers while men are getting orders & helping customers find things.

I think it would be helpful on this forum if we could signify if we are male versus female....I am female but I have to admit I am bad at assuming a member on here is a male and find out they are female!
I have noticed the same thing though, more males seem to be in the hobby (esp in the local club) and I see a ton of asians in the hobby!
I used to work at a LFS for a short time and I was amazed at some customers......a woman naturally did not know anything on this hobby and would have to have reassurance from a male employee. I was one of two female employees and we both noted the same thing.
Stores sometime are just as guilty! Until just recently I would NEVER, EVER go into a particular store, because they were prejudice against woman. All woman that I would talk to said the same thing, we were treated like idiots if we were even approached even after asking for help......luckily management has changed and it is very, very different now

It is almost 50/50 where I shop at. The shocker to me is that more women have aggressive tanks than the men do. I would just figure it would be the other way around. Man was I ever so wrong.

    Some interesting perceptions, here. ;)

I wouldn't try to guess why, but all my family and friends who have aquariums, both fresh and saltwater, are men. The women tend to prefer dogs and cats.

    Cheers
