I disagree, I see tons of women in the hobby at the LFS. I think it depends on where you are and how you look at it. I am often purchasing stuff for my tank when I am not w/ the boss. Therefor, you just see a man and not a man and woman in the hobby.

that sounds like a setup if i ever heard one. :)

my guess is that more male children are encouraged to participate in outdoor activities like camping and fishing for example. this builds a love for nature and can lead to this hobby. probably the same reason more men enter the science fields. However, i imagine this gap has lessened over the years.

I have thought the same thing but cannot think of why.

I have always wondered why half the people at my lfs are of asian ethnicity. I really could care less what race people are, but there is a large amount of asian people at my lfs usually. The store is not in a place where a lot of asian people live either. I always find myself asking that though. I answered a question with a totally different question. Haha. My bad.

That's a really good question. I'm a girl and I LOVE my tank! But I do notice way more men than women.

I'd say it's because of the pluming, electrical, and other work that involves tools and requires some know how on how to deal with day to day issues that may arise. Many women dont see them selves as being able to work with power tools or pluming a tank or setting up the pump system, ect.. That being said and it should go without saying that is do manly to the traditional rolls we take on i.e girls play with Barbie and boys JI Joe, ect ect.. but obviously women can just as easily put together a tank... many just dont see them selves as being able to till they try.
    well thats my 2c.

there are 3 LFS stores i go to (and i picked these 3 out of many around here) and i never saw a woman buys there. it always seems like i'm the only one.
there is a woman working in one of them, which is very refreshing :)

    Interesting thread

where I live, majority of the customers in the LFS are in fact Asians
and a large majority are Asian males

there are naturally many couples that shop together and in fact whole families that visit
    the interest is often shared

its true to say that the initiative is often taken by the male, often after consulting his partner and then being told what to decide to buy LOL

I have often seen, males on their own , checking stuff, asking questions, making a purchase etc
But I sit here racking my brains and cant recall a single incident of a lone female, doing the same - I do know for a fact it has happened, as my good lady came back last week, with a 1000g tub of Rowa and some Reefbuilder for us/ me LOL

Its probably something really simple to explain- its probably a throwback to the stone age, when males where the hunter gatherers and as reef keeping is hunter, gathering and then placing in a glass box - it probably just fits in better with the male conditioning syndrome

but as roles are no longer as well defined , then I believe ultimately
anyone with an ability to hunt and gather, will hunt and gather
so the ratio will even out eventually IMHO

I've noticed the same; seems like the hobby is mostly male. I don't know why. Oh well, not me!
