I have a megaflow on my 72 that's rated as 600 gph. Does anyone know how much it can really handle?

    650, 700, 800, 900,1000,1100,1200????????

I'm thinking of upgrading my return pump. Eventually I'd like a 120 DT, so it would be nice to get a return pump that would work on my current setup and also the 120 in the future.

    Thanks

What size pipe is coming through the bottom of the overflow? You will not be able to force more than gravity will allow so if your bulkhead fitting is 1" you will be able to max out as much as 1000GPH with zero fittings or restrictions to flow.
As soon as you start putting in ball valves, elbows, etc. you will decrease flow.

Overflow's 1" output with no restriction.

The return is T'd off to the fuge plus the head to the DT is 3'. Therefore, I went with a Quiet One 6000 (1506 GPH).

I reckon the GPH at the DT will be around 1000, considering the T, 2 45 elbows and 3' of head.

it sounds like you are pretty close to being maxed out on your current system.

However, if you are looking to upgrade the pump, you can always install a ball valve on the OUTLET side (never restrict inlet flow to a pump!!!) and throttle it down from there while reducing energy consumption. If you do get the bigger pump for your tank now you can certainly tame the beast until you can unleash it all the way with your future 120. I am guessing you want to stay with an in-sump pump then? Ever consider going with an external pump? They add no heat to the system and typically come in larger sizes. I have a Reeflo Dart on my 120 DT and it is no louder than a little airpump. It is so quiet considering how much water it is moving!!!
