Right, i understand that. I just wanted to get the point accross that you cant just throw a u-tube in there and call it good. bvb, One of the DIY options would probably be a good choice if drilling is out of the question.

 

i think ill just go with the U tube, drilling the tank i have never done and looks like quite a big deal. its already full with rocks and sand and its cycling i dont really want to make the adjustment to drill. i know it would be easier on such a small tank but im really interested in this other method.

 

Dude this really is basic plumbing stuff, especially for someone experienced. Don't be afraid of using the search function. We are all here to help and learn from each other, but your asking us to do all your research. What is next come over and build it for you? A check valve will always fail. Trust me, unless you relace them they wear out, and you end up with a wet carpet. What I would do would be to get a tiny HOB such as http://www.fosterandsmithaquatics.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3578 3579 9821&pcatid=9821
Then drill in using a 1/2" bulkhead.

im going to do this, its not the end of the world if the tank overflows a bit its only 5 gallons in the case it does. ill just do the pvc diy one.
