you ever hear of The Mame nano overflow? its expensive but its made of glass and pretty small. not sure on there availability but the LFS I work at use to get them in and I think they might have been one of the only places in the US to get them. they take pre orders on there web site when they are expecting to get them but I will have to see if they are even getting any in the near future

I agree, what are the dimensions of the tank? Now, what are the dimensions of the overflow box?

Why not a DIY PVC overflow & some flex tubing? tap the top & use a lifter pump just like store bought. small footprint, easy to make & what $20 total including the lifter pump.

A 5gal tank what 1/2" should still be plenty.

is there any way to just syphon the water out of the tank without an overflow? i have done this on another sump i just had a rigid U shaped tube that went into the tank that just syphoned water into the sump.

Sounds like you answered your own question there bud. Use a rigid U shaped tube, and syphon into the sump..

sorry didnt quite know what you meant with that, so that would not cause any problems? i just cant help but wonder then why if this is going to work just fine how come an overflow is used? what purpose does it serve other than just to surface skim?

it also holds a constant water line. If your pump goes off and all you have is a u-tube siphoning water out nothing is going to stop it until it reaches air. Then, when the power comes back on the pump will turn on and overflow the tank....unles someone is there to restart the siphon.

There are about 100 of them in the DIY section.

to control the syphon stop thats why you have a check valve on the return & a lifting pump to restart the flow. Same thing as the purchased ones.
