great, i was under the impression a sump was ridiculous for such a small tank. i was planning just a small power filter. this will be a great way to hide the equpment. one thing tho how do i know to match the amount of water taken by the overflow with the return pump, i have never set up a sump from scratch always just bought it all together.

Yeah but no fish or anything delicate, you could just pop that in a bucket whilst you drill.

I think the sumps a little unnecessary for such a small tank. I would just get a small power filter, put your heater in the back chamber like some ppl on here have theirs. Then just run a carbon sock and maybe a little rock rubble inside. Along with weekly or bi-weekly water changes.

A sump is a nice add on for any tank. But I decided not to run one in my 5 gallon bc of space issues and i wanted something simple and cheap. I run a aquaclear 70 modded into a fuge, it has sand and cheato along with some live rock rubble. As for water changes i do water changes about every two or three days. Only small amounts like 2 cups at a time. Every couple of weeks i do a larger change of something like 8 cups just to make sure im on top of it.
