I was at the LFS the other day and noticed a display of marine snow. I was wondering when it is important to be using such a product? Is it only to grow pods, or is it useful in a tank such as mine (mixed reef)? Is it a replacement for fish food, or what? Thanks, and sorry for the basic question.

As far as I know marine snow is just dead stuff that accumulates while falling towards the ocean floor. It has been known to increase nitrates, hair algae and cyano from what I read about it. I would prefer the DT's or other live phyto or some cyclopeeze. IMO its just pollution, you can probably get the same effect blowin dust off your live rock and cleaning the glass to feed things like feather dusters etc.

Take a turkey baster or powerhead to your sump and/or rockwork and blow around the detritus that has settled. Free marine snow for everyone.
