What were the circumnstances of the splits? Negatives exp's on anything are variable. I have run a Stealth 300w on my reef for the past 12 months without issues. I unplug the heater anytime I'm doing a water change and let it cool prior to doing it. The only time I ever set the heater was 12 months ago when it went into my tank. I have not touched it since & it has kept excellent temp.

If human error is to be blamed for the bad rap the Stealths are getting, then it's just like any other product that "can" have issues if used improperly.

I got one with my new tank. it is now in the trash. it shocked me when I was getting it all setup in the tank. since I have a temp controller, I am not worried about it sticking on, but any product that I have to worry about it staying on a boiling my fish would be replaced or at least yanked immediately.

Yes, we use ground probes for stay voltage for not for a downright 120 volt to the water! sure way to fish and coral stress and death.

i think the heater shocking you is not a viable arguement, i have heard negatice experiences of shocking with all brands of heaters, hence the reason i turn my heaters off before even putting my hand in the tank. i do worry bout the splitting but im still leaning towards that it was caused by human error.

Not human error. Random malfunction. Just not worth the risk.
