Hey so I need a new heater for my 40+ gallon tank I am upgrading to. These seem fairly cheap on BigAls online, the 200W is only 21 plus shipping. Any downsides or bad reviews. If you recommend other heaters i would love to hear also, thanks very much!

I have this same one. But mine is 250w. I use it on my 29g & I've had the heater for about 3 months. No problems with it aside from generally being +/1 one degree ff from what it is set at.

I do like that it has a light in the top to say when it's working. Red means it is trying to raise or lower temp to desired temp. Green means it's at that desired temp & is working. The only downside to this light is that it is hard to read the numbers, as the LED is so bright.

I would def go with the Jager heater. Get either the Eheim version from Dr.foster and smith or just the Jager from marinedepot.

So there are reports of the 'shatter proof' shattering?

I have one and it works great. Mine is a 150w.

Well they're not actually 'shattering' but supposedly catching fire. I have the 250w one & will keep using it.. I see no problem unless the owner/operator doesn't pay attention.

Sometimes a heater can get 'stuck' in the on position. Thus raising the heater's temp, then the water. What causes the 'boom' would be the drastic change in temp when not-so-smart people yank the heater out of the tank before unplugging it...you can imagine what normally happens next.

If a product is gonna get bad rep, it should be for what the product's manufacturer did wrong...not what the operator did to end up having the problem be much worse.

So somebody pulled one out that was still plugged in and it caught fire after exploding?
SOunds like a fringe case.. or are there multiple reports of this?

Several people including me have had problems with them eventually shocking you when submerged.

..& that's why we have grounding probes.
