You could try a couple of mangroves in there too. And I would think any sand would be fine as long as it isnt too coarse.

Your tank doesn't happen to be near a window is it? If you want a mangrove and have a window nearby I recommend poking it through the blinds so it gets sunlight. My mangrove grows crazy fast and I waste no money on light bulbs or electricity for it.

In your DIY fuge, you won't have room for a lot of sand, so I'd keep it at around 1 1/2 inches. The Cheato will be removing the nitrates, so a DSB is a waste (and will leave you very little room for the all important Cheato). Your best light for growth is a 6500K florescent.

I just woke up and trying to catch up on the thread. In regard to lighting, do the bulb come from the LFS, or can they be obtained from another store? Also, where do you get the number you are all throwing around?

Lowes. 23w spiral compact. Or Walmart has them for cheaper in a 2pk. 6500k daylight bulb.

How can you determine the k number? Is that on the bulb packaging?

i have a HOB fuge for about 3months now and i have 2 smaller pieces of LR with a fuge mud bottom and a nice size ball of cheato. For light i am running a small 14 led light with alittle blue and mostly white lights. The fuge is doing what it should its a crawling buffet for my mandarin and also it has filled with green good stuff to filter the water. So depending on your filter size you are converting too trying a small piece of LR or 2 and the mangroves are always a great idea.

Yeah, it is. Most CF bulbs have it listed now.

I'm in the process of making my DIY HOB fuge, and was wondering how to determine if an adhesive/glue is safe for use in aquariums. Is there certain chemicals that will cause harm?

In my possession I have a tube of "Dap One Stik 2 Permanent Adhesive", and was trying to figure out if it was safe for use.
