I had a pair of bone cutters that weren't dried enough and the hinge rusted up....BAD!!! You could barely open and close them. I didn't want to throw them out but I also didn't want to use an industrial solvent because sometimes I use them under water. Just on a hunch, I put them in a plastic dixie cup with some olive oil and let them sit overnight. It worked perfectly.

Sweet idea and info. I let mine get a little rusty and was able to clear it with RODI water. I just try and remember to rinse and dry them well before putting away now.

hmm..I never would have thought about the olive oil. ;)

I use 50/50 vinegar/water to clean most things.
