Mag 9.5 Drive Pump

    Restricting the discharge side of a centrifugal pump causes no harm, in fact on many pumps it makes them more efficient.
    Mags do tend to add a lot of heat to a system though so a smaller, better pump might be a good choice, something like an Eheim 1250 would probably be perfect.

    Addin a tee and running water back to the sump is a bad bad idea. It raises the work the pump must perform so increases the watts drawn and the heat it produces.

    I stand corrected. FOREVERFISHY please disregard my previous advice. I trust AZ's advise over my limited experience. He has been a great help to me and others. Thank you AZ for teaching me something new. Gotta love this great hobby.

    Quick question (Didnt think it was necessary to start a new thread).
    How do I figure out what what size pump would I need? My current Mag 9.5 is connected to a 3/4" tubing (about a foot in length) which is connected to the PVC pipe (1 1/2" by 4 ft. approx)

    Not sure if a mag 5 or 7 would be better.

    All pumps have a pump curve or head curve which shows what they are capable of pumping at various heads or backpressures. You need to calculate your head, determine what flow you want for the return and find a pump that fits those parameters.
    Its best to study the pump curves as some pumps handle head pressure better than others and some are more efficient than others meaning you get more water per watt of power consumed. Most pumps such as Mag, suggest in their literature you upsize the lines from the pump fitting sizes at least one step to reduce headloss and improve efficiency. If the pump has 3/4" step up to 1" etc.
    Many vendors have all the pump curves on their sites like Marine Depot and Premium Aquatics and each manufacturer should have them on their websites too.
